When I went vegan in 2007 I was fat. In the 12 years since, I have remained fat. Unfortunately in a movement that is supposed to represent justice and a fight against oppression I still found that my body was subject to ridicule, rude remarks and accusations that I must not be a real vegan. I was told that I shouldn't represent veganism because my body would turn others off from veganism. This created an environment that is unwelcoming and often hostile to fat people. On the flip side, some well meaning advocates think they can use mainstream fatphobia as a shortcut to achieve animal liberation by pushing veganism as a magical weight loss program. This has led to the general public thinking that a vegan cannot be fat. My friends, all of these has led to a state of horrible confusion that is neither helpful to the animals we claim to be allies to, nor those of us who make up this movement.
To that end, several years I started putting the phrase "fat happy vegan" on shirts, buttons and stickers. I wanted to create something that increased the representation of my fellow fat vegans. Something that lets the world know that vegans come in ALL shapes and sizes. I'm proud to present the next generation of Fat Happy Vegan with this glorious space manatee.
